Introducing RELIC 05: FUSION — a singular metal work by Charles Lethaby

Each RELIC is conceived as a 1/1 object. No two are the same. Individually machined, engraved, finished and resolved by hand, every piece exists as a unique artefact — defined not only by its imagery, but by the material from which it is made.

Crafted in anodised aluminium or Grade 5 titanium, FUSION explores one of humanity's most ambitious scientific pursuits: the attempt to recreate the process that powers the stars.

At its centre is the fusion reactor — a machine designed to contain matter at extraordinary temperatures and conditions in the pursuit of controlled nuclear fusion. The composition focuses on the intricate geometry of the reactor itself, transforming a complex piece of scientific engineering into a dense, almost architectural study of structure, energy and precision.

The title refers to the process of nuclear fusion, in which atomic nuclei combine and release immense amounts of energy. It is the fundamental reaction that powers the Sun and other stars, and its replication on Earth represents a remarkable intersection of physics, engineering and human ambition.

Rather than depicting energy as an abstract force, FUSION focuses on the machine created to control it — reflecting on humanity's ability to understand forces found in nature and construct extraordinary objects through which to harness them.

The surface is carefully treated to create a restrained interplay of light and shadow. Fine engraved details emerge gradually as the piece is viewed from different angles, rewarding close inspection and revealing new characteristics as the metal responds to its surrounding light.

Sized to the proportions of a traditional baseball card, each piece measures approximately 89 mm × 64 mm, translating a familiar and collectible format into a permanent material form.

RELIC 05 is not a reproduction, but a singular work of material presence — a one-of-one object reflecting humanity's continuing pursuit of one of science's most extraordinary possibilities: bringing the power of the stars to Earth.
