Introducing RELIC 04: THE DESCENT — a singular metal work by Charles Lethaby.

Each RELIC is conceived as a 1/1 object. No two are the same. Individually machined, finished, and resolved by hand, every piece exists as a unique artefact —defined not only by its form, but by the subtle variations that arise through its making.

Crafted in anodised aluminium or titanium, THE DESCENT captures the final stage of humanity's return from space. Suspended beneath a fully deployed parachute, the capsule drifts silently back towards Earth — a moment defined not by speed or spectacle, but by precision, restraint, and the successful completion of an extraordinary journey.

The title refers to the final phase of every crewed mission, when engineering gives way to gravity and trust is placed in systems designed to perform flawlessly under immense pressure. It is a moment of transition: from the hostile environment of space to the familiarity of Earth, where months or years of planning culminate in a controlled and measured return.

Rather than celebrating the drama of launch, THE DESCENT reflects on the quieter achievement of coming home. It is a meditation on exploration itself — reminding us that every great journey is defined not only by the courage to leave, but by the ingenuity required to return safely.

The surface is carefully treated to create a restrained interplay of light and shadow. Fine details emerge gradually as the piece is viewed from different angles, rewarding close inspection and revealing new characteristics over time. This quiet complexity is intentional — a reflection of both the subject matter and the process through which the work is made.

Sized to the proportions of a traditional baseball card, each piece measures approximately 89 mm × 64 mm, translating a familiar format into a permanent, material form.

RELIC 04 is not a reproduction, but a singular work of material presence — a one-of-one object commemorating one of humanity's greatest engineering achievements: the safe return from beyond Earth.
